Ally People Solutions, is a 50 year nonprofit organization in St. Paul, Minnesota. We serve persons with intellectual disabilities, mental health conditions and their loved ones with employment and life skills services so each consumer can live the full, productive life that he or she desires. We do this by:
- Assisting people in choosing and advocating for their life and career path with individualized, person-centered services
- Providing opportunities for work in inclusive, community settings with a dynamic and flexible approach to services
- Linking people to volunteer and recreational options through innovative partnerships and natural supports in the community
Born of a parent’s heart, Ally People Solutions was created in 1965 by families with adult children with intellectual developmental disabilities. Faced with the painful option of institutional or foster care placement, these founding parents chose to care for their loved ones at home. Frustrated with the lack of support services, they rented space at Christ Child School in Saint Paul for day activities. This was a volunteer effort and provided a safe place for their sons and daughters to learn and have social contact. They outgrew the space and moved to the basement of Merriam Park Community Center and created Merriam Park Day Activity Center, now with paid staff. The need was so great, that they soon outgrew that facility.
That’s when they moved the Midway area on University Ave and created Midway Training Services or MTS. All along there was a growing understanding that people with intellectual developmental disabilities were capable of far more than anyone knew. Over time, staff learned to expect more including employment for many of the people they served and worked to make that possible. Multiple sites were established in order to serve people closer to their neighborhoods. Supported and independent employment provides income and dignity for many. For some, community volunteer along with creation, health and wellness and other opportunities serve to create a sense of purpose, contributing to the vibrancy of our community.
With a fresh look at the landscape, the MTS board cast a vision for an even more responsive and effective organization. This vision included a name change that more adequately reflects the posture and mission of the organization. After a thorough process of listening to and reflecting with the stakeholders, Ally People Solutions was chosen.
